Born in Liverpool, I moved to Shropshire in 1962 when I was 17 to commence a year’s practical on a local farm prior to going to Harper Adams College. However the very severe winter of 1962/3 intervened and I was laid off so took a temporary job (or so I thought) with British Rail but never went back. After 5 years with BR I was made redundant so moved to work for the local water board which eventually became Severn Trent Water. During my time with them I became a qualified Health & Safety professional and in 1997 took early retirement and set up my own Consultancy which I have run ever since.
I have a wide variety of clients in all sorts of industries. These include manufacturing and construction businesses some of which are connected with agriculture (such as Fullwood).
In 1965 my mother and I purchased a 25 acre smallholding on which I kept pigs, sheep and cattle and I ran this for 40 years and through this built up still further my knowledge of agriculture. I also founded and ran the Shropshire Smallholders Group for a number of years.
For many years I have had a connection with the Shropshire & West Midlands Agricultural Society and have been advising them on Health & Safety matters relating to the West Mid Show (now Shropshire County Show). I have also been a Trustee of the Society for the last 2 years. I am also the Health & Safety officer for Shrewsbury Flower Show.
